(Yes, I borrowed the title of my post from the web site) There are a lot of organizations out there that are thinly-concealed fronts for industries and organizations that want to get out a message without it appearing to come directly from industry.
Now there's a web site to help the average person spot these groups:

It's a resource to keep in mind the next time you see a dubious fact cited by an organization you've never heard of before.
I don't know much about the Center for Media and Democracy, but I know Consumer Reports to be reputable.
