Weird stuff I've eaten recently
Jul. 4th, 2012 12:41 amI realized that I've had a number of odd things to eat in the past two weeks.
Someone brought durians to
sunspiral's recent party. I'd had a durian smoothie in a Vietnamese restaurant some years back. That gave me an idea of what real durian might be like, but it was like getting an idea of what wolves are like by playing with a puppy. Durian, for those who don't know, is a fruit that famous for smelling bad and tasting good. Some describe the smell as sulfurous, or like rotten onions, or like sewage. I had no trouble detecting it from 15 feet or so downwind. The taste has been described as like custard or onion chutney. I'd lean towards custard, but with an aftertaste of sulfur. It was tasty, but I doubt I'll make them a regular thing. The worst feature of the durian was belching after eating it. This seemed to bring back the durian smell, but not the flavor.
Iceland is a good location for weird food. There have been famines in Iceland's history. They ate what was available to get by and kept on eating it out of nostalgia, I guess. Rotten shark (aka hakarl) is probably the most notorious. They say that fresh Greenland shark is poisonous. It turns out that if you bury it for 3 months or so and then cure it for another 3, it can be eaten. There should be a statue to commemorate the first person brave (or hungry) enough to try this. This is another outdoor-only snack. It smells of rotten fish (some say ammonia). The taste is a bit like scallop, only it's obviously not a good scallop that you're eating. It's traditional to wash this down with Brennivin (Icelandic aquavit), and I can see why.
I've eaten horse before. I have no problems with a nice horse steak or even horse fat sushi, but smoked foal was new to me. I admit to a temporary qualm or two before deciding that it was just the equine equivalent of veal. Am I a bad person because I'd now like to try this in the form of an MLPLT sandwich? BTW, very tender, not too different from beef.
