Former Republican and former senator from RI Lincoln Chafee has written a book that comments on the Democratic unwillingness or inability to stand up to Bush. Chafee is (or was) a moderate to liberal Republican, so I don't think he's got an ax to grind against Democrats in general here.

He confirms that the briefings given to Senators about the threat posed by Saddam were not very convincing. It's also clear that the Democrats were fearful of being seen as weak on defense.
It would be interesting to know which Democrats went along with the administration to protect their careers and which ones were convinced by the so-called evidence, but I doubt we'll find that out any time soon. I'll probably look up the book when it comes out to see if there's more detail on the subject.
