Mar. 5th, 2007 11:16 pmAmerica's must do list from the New York Times.
Restore Habeas Corpus
Stop Illegal Spying
Ban Torture, Really
Close the C.I.A. Prisons
Account for ‘Ghost Prisoners’
Ban Extraordinary Rendition
Tighten the Definition of Combatant
Screen Prisoners Fairly and Effectively
Ban Tainted Evidence
Ban Secret Evidence
Better Define ‘Classified’ Evidence
Respect the Right to Counsel
close Guantánamo
The author admits this isn't an exhaustive list, but I think there are a few things that really should be on it. We need a stake put through the heart of the so-called "unitary executive" theory. I don't know if Congress alone can do that. We also need to put a stop to the practice of using signing statements to nullify laws. Some investigations to highlight the worst abuses and to put the spotlight on those responsible would be nice too.
