Bursting the Bubble?
Apr. 30th, 2006 11:47 amEver wanted to tell the president exactly what you think of him and his so-called policies? Someone just got through the president's bubble, past all the spin-control and efforts to exclude unwelcome opinions, and spoke up in a situation where the president couldn't just walk away. And it wasn't just anyone, it was Stephen Colbert. The event was the White House Correspondent dinner which was attended by the president and his wife.
For those of you who don't know Colbert, he's the star of the Colbert Report, a comedy news show. On the show, he's got the persona of a conservative journalist, but taken to such an extreme that the convervative arguments he champions look ridiculous. Rapier wit doesn't begin to describe him, but it's a start.
Here's some red meat from the event:
The government that governs best is the government that governs least, and by these standards we have set up a fabulous government in Iraq.
reality has a well known liberal bias
I stand by this man because he stands for things. Not only for things, he stands on things, like aircraft carriers, rubble and recently flooded city squares. And that sends a strong mesasge that no matter what happens to America she will always rebound with the most powerfully staged photo ops in the world!
The greatest thing about this President is you know where he stands. He believes the same thing Wednesday that he believed on Monday, no matter what happened Tuesday!
Fox News gives you both sides of every story, the President's side and the Vice President's side.

Oh, and let's not forget this little jab at the press:
Write that novel you've got kicking around in your head--you know, the one about the intrepid Washington reporter with the courage to stand up to the Administration--you know, fiction!
Who chose Colbert for this show? I'd love to know. I see two possibilities. Either they knew exactly who Colbert is and wanted this confrontation, or they knew he was popular and sounded conservative and missed the sarcasm entirely. It was probably the former, but it would make this all extra funny if it was the latter. So tell everyone that's what it was. There's no evidence disproving it after all (and for this administration, that's evidence enough).
